No, the viewer opens public profiles only. A private profile gets the message about a private account from the table above, and its stories stay visible only in Instagram, to the followers the author has approved.

One of three reasons. It expired: stories disappear 24 hours after posting, and if the author saved it to a highlight, it is under Highlights. It is for Close Friends: the author shared it with that list only, so it is not public. Or the stories didn't load this time: if Instagram shows the story but the Stories tab here is empty, run the search again in a minute.

No. There is no sign-up and no Instagram password field: type a username, press Search, and the profile's tabs open. What this means for a story's viewer list is under "What the account owner sees" above.

Open the Highlights tab and tap a cover. The stories of that highlight appear, each with its own Download button. A highlight stays on the profile until the author removes it, so it can be watched long after its stories have left the Stories tab.
